Today I’m sitting here staring at my Wall of Ideas, which, because I’ve been working on it for a minute, looks more like an early entry in Carrie Mathison’s series of spy-hunting bulletin boards than I like.
Sadly, I don’t even have Mandy Patinkin to help me with it.
Really, it’s not the worst thing in the world to have a lot of ideas about what I should work on next. I mean, it’s TOTALLY the worst if you’re that guy (Richard, maybe?) from one of the early Sandman books, who captures a Muse and then gets super extra punished. THAT was the worst.
But for me, it’s just kind of blurry. There are 20ish Post-its on my Wall of Ideas, ranging broadly through category, audience, and genre. Some of them are full-fledged manuscripts that need a thoughtful, thorough rewrite. Some are scraps — for example, one of the Post-its says STEAMPUNK FABRIC DOG SWORD. I have no idea what that means, although the words do hang together nicely… It’s practically fleshing itself out as we speak. Most of them are clear concepts with not much actual writing already done on them.
The worst is not knowing whether or not the one I think I probably most want to work on next is the one I really SHOULD work on next — there is so much up in the air right now that it’s hard to look into the future and make a clear decision. Although: I am going to SCBWI in February and that must be considered also (BECAUSE I AM INCREDIBLY STOKED ABOUT IT!).
Really, though, I think we all know what I’m going to do. I’ve been talking about Fenno for a while now, and I think perhaps it’s time to dive in and see what happens. He’s such a great character, and I’m kind of in love with the story I think he’s going to tell.
On the wall opposite the Wall of Ideas, there’s a plain white dry-erase board. Previously it’s been ALL ABOUT WYATT but actually now I think it’s time for it to be ALL ABOUT FENNO.
